10 Health Benefits of Going Barefoot

They say that superheroes only exist in comic books, but that’s not entirely true. Humans can conduct superhuman-like feats thanks to our biology. For example, The design of our feet and legs and our ability to sweat makes us the second fastest long-distance animal on the planet.

And believe it or not, we can actually move faster and more comfortably if we ditch running shoes. There are plenty of other benefits of going barefoot, including the following ten.

1. Improves Posture

Going barefoot helps strengthen the muscles of your feet and ankles, which can improve overall posture. That’s because the nerves in your feet can better communicate with the rest of your body. You may find that your back, shoulders, and legs feel better after taking a barefoot walk.

2. Stimulates Circulation

The continuous flexing of muscles and tendons in your feet that comes with barefoot walking helps stimulate circulation and reduce inflammation in the entire body. While well-fitted shoes won’t necessarily cut off circulation, anything gripping your body can impact blood flow.

3. Increases Flexibility

Barefoot walking increases the flexibility of your feet, ankles, knees, and hips, allowing for a better range of motion for everyday activities. Unless you wear barefoot running shoes exclusively, your feet won’t be able to go through the full range of motion if you wear footwear.

4. Reduces Pain

Going barefoot can help reduce pain from chronic conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, knee, and joint pain, as well as muscle pain in the feet and calves. If you find the ideal running shoes for going barefoot, you can even reduce the possibility of getting stones or glass in your foot.

5. Improves Balance

Without the restriction of shoes, your feet can spread out and grip uneven surfaces, which can help you better balance yourself and make walking easier. If you’re about to fall, running shoes will prevent you from grabbing the ground, which could lead to more walking accidents.

6. Better Immune System

Being barefoot provides your feet with greater stimulation, sending more signals to your body’s immune system, making it stronger. Studies show that walking barefoot decreases red blood cell count and increases white blood cell count, which implies a much stronger immune system.

7. Reduces Stress

Just the act of being outside and feeling the ground beneath your feet can be a great stress reliever. That same study that linked barefoot walking to an increased immune system also showed that walking barefoot can help improve sleep, reduce pain, and lower stress.

8. Stimulates Nerve Endings

By going barefoot, you can experience sensations from your environment first-hand, stimulating nerve endings in your feet that are dormant or “numb” when wearing shoes. It can also feel good to wiggle your toes in the earth or around the house, which is enough of a benefit in itself.

9. Feel Connected to Nature

Going barefoot can help you gain a greater appreciation for the natural world. Feel the ground beneath your feet and the wind on your skin for a greater connection to your environment. Being in nature is good for humans, especially when they have fewer layers constricting their bodies.

10. Better Breathability

The air in your environment can be absorbed through your skin, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach your blood cells and organs. If you have less clothing covering your body, you’ll help it absorb more vitamin D, which is important for our moods and immune systems.

In Conclusion…

These are just a few of the great health benefits of going barefoot. If you want to try it, make sure you’re always walking on a safe, clean surface like grass, sand, or dirt. Try taking a barefoot walk through a park or in your yard, and enjoy all the amazing health benefits it brings.

Vacuum Technology and the Power of Synchrotrons: Everything You Need to Know About These Versatile Scientific Tools and the Challenges They Overcome

Have you ever wondered how scientists generate those stunning X-ray images that reveal the fine and intricate details of biological and material samples? Look no further than synchrotrons – circular particle accelerators that energize electrons to produce intense beams of X-rays, infrared, and ultraviolet light. These powerful machines, developed initially to create particle collisions, have evolved into highly-tunable light sources, making them an essential tool in a variety of scientific fields today.

What exactly are synchrotrons?

Synchrotrons are among the world’s most powerful and versatile scientific tools. They are particle accelerators that can generate powerful light beams ranging from X-rays to ultraviolet and even infrared radiation.

At their most basic level, synchrotrons operate by using powerful electromagnetic fields to accelerate electrons or other charged particles to extremely high speeds. These particles are then directed into a circular path and made to flow around the accelerator ring close to the speed of light. As they do so, they emit a continuous stream of radiation that is then focused into intense beams using sophisticated optical systems.

Synchrotrons applications

The key to synchrotrons’ success is their ability to produce radiation of many different wavelengths, from microwaves to X-rays. As a result, they are extremely versatile scientific instruments that can be used for a wide range of applications, from studying the atomic and molecular structure of materials to analyzing the behavior of proteins and other biological molecules.

Aside from scientific applications, synchrotrons have a wide range of practical applications in industry, medicine, and other fields. They are used in the development of new drugs and medicines, for example, as well as the production of new materials and the analysis of forensic evidence.

Although synchrotrons are a type of particle accelerator capable of producing high-intensity X-rays, they are used in medical imaging as well. Synchrotrons are very large tools, they require specialized facilities and expertise. Medical X-ray machines use a lower energy level that produces clear images of the body while reducing the risk of harmful radiation exposure.

Overall, synchrotrons are pretty astonishing machines that have transformed our understanding of nature and our ability to manipulate it. They are proof of the power of human intelligence and the limitless possibilities of vacuum technology and scientific discovery.

Synchrotron Vacuum Challenges: Overcoming the Obstacles to Optimize Performance

What are the challenges that synchrotrons face?

Keeping synchrotrons running smoothly usually involves overcoming some substantial challenges. Strong magnetic fields, wide temperature ranges, and tight space for vacuum pump installation are obstacles that engineers and scientists must compete with when designing the acceleration system and vacuum apparatus.

Synchrotron Vacuum Challenges (and Solutions)

Synchrotrons’ Intense Vacuum Requirements

One of the most difficult aspects of maintaining a synchrotron vacuum system is dealing with the intense magnetic fields and electromagnetic interference produced by power generators. This requires a sophisticated understanding of the system’s requirements as well as careful vacuum system design.

Managing Both Gas Loads and Pump Placement in an Effective Design

Creating a vacuum with synchrotron technology is an ongoing process. One of the most difficult challenges in designing a synchrotron vacuum system is managing the amount of gas generated by desorption. This process generates a gas load, which must be pumped in order to maintain the required level of vacuum.

Because even a trace amount of gas can interfere with the electron beam, the vacuum system must constantly pump any gas molecules released during operation.

To complicate matters further, modern synchrotrons are being designed with smaller vessel cross-sections in order to reduce costs and improve magnet aperture. This means that there is less room for vacuum pumps installation, which can be a problem because the pumps must be located where the maximum pumping speeds are required.

Two factors influence the desired level of vacuum pressure in the system: the required beam lifetime and personnel safety. Residual gas molecules in the vacuum can reduce the electron beam’s lifetime, which is undesirable. Furthermore, when electrons interact with residual gas molecules, X-rays are generated, which can present a safety risk to those working near the synchrotron.

Agilent Solutions for Synchrotrons’ Vacuum

Agilent Vacuum Technology provides a variety of vacuum solutions designed to work with large and complex systems that require an ultrahigh or extreme high vacuum. These solutions include different types of pumps, such as dry rough pumps, turbo pumps for high vacuum (visit the Agilent website here), high-performance ion pumps, and non-evaporative getter pumps for ultrahigh vacuum. Agilent’s vacuum measurement products and pump controllers are also available to help operators monitor and control the vacuum system accurately and remotely.

Synchrotron vacuum systems are constantly evolving as new technology is developed. Researchers and engineers are always looking for ways to improve the performance and efficiency of the vacuum system to maximize the scientific output of the synchrotron.

With Agilent’s advanced solutions, synchrotron operators can address the challenges posed by vacuum systems and achieve optimal performance from their synchrotron. Discover the latest vacuum technology advancements here.

Synchrotron development today

Synchrotrons are extremely powerful machines that have revolutionized our understanding of the world around us. Synchrotrons face significant challenges, such as the presence of strong magnetic fields, temperature changes, and compact design. Despite these issues thanks to industrial partners in all the disciplines (including vacuum), scientists and engineers have developed advanced solutions to overcome obstacles. Agilent Vacuum Technology offers a number of vacuum solutions that are intended to improve the performance and efficiency of synchrotron systems.

Synchrotrons will continue to be an important tool in a variety of scientific fields and industries, pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery and innovation as they advance and improve.

The World’s Largest Photography Competitions — History of Photo Awards

If you really want to learn something, you should watch how the best of the best do it. Competitions, especially worldwide competitions, are an opportunity to learn from the experience of professionals and to be inspired by their ideas. Sometimes it can also be a bar to strive for, especially when you’re just starting out. In this piece, we will tell you about some major photography contests, what the themes are, where they are held,  what exceptions may be in the regulations, and what the winners of the contests will win.

International Photography Awards

One of the most famous and grandiose photography awards in the world is the International Photography Awards (or IPA). The colossal prize fund is the highest level of public recognition with the awards ceremony at New York’s Carnegie Hall — everything is serious.

The IPA is a real “Oscar” among photographers, where the winner is even entitled to a statuette, but instead of the Oscar, they are given a “Lucie”. The photography and art gurus selected as the jury participate in the selection of the finalists, and the winners are the best of the best. Moreover, the IPA nominations are divided between the categories of professionals and students/amateurs. There are also many different areas, among which there are such non-standard topics as the Book, Advertising, Fine Art, Deep Perspective, etc. And even if you didn’t manage to get to this photographic “Olympia” , IPA has branches in different countries.

Winning the IPA is very prestigious. This is not just money and a statuette, but also publication in the annual cataloug, display of works at the award ceremony, mention in a press release that is watched by more than 50,000 IPA members around the world, and, of course, recognition by the photographic community. Interestingly, the most important nomination “Photographer of the Year” is awarded not for a single picture, but for a personal contribution to the development of photography. Mustafa Hasson won the 2019 Photographer of the Year for capturing Palestinian protests on the border with Israel on May 30, 2018.

Hasselblad

Hasselblad is also something that is made up of much more than just beautiful photographs. This is a prestigious award for contribution to the development of the art of photography, founded by the Victor Hasselblad Foundation. Hasselblad was an engineer, photographer and founder of the eponymous brand of photographic equipment.

Nominal award — this is awarded not to a specific picture, but to a person. Despite the rather impressive prize fund of one million Swedish kronor, the most important thing here is recognition. Only the top masters of photography get here. People who, in their shots, make you think: these are people who have became a prominent figure in art and changed the understanding of photography as a genre. So, if you want to understand how photography has developed in culture and society, look at the photos of these winners, but, most importantly, read their biographies.

Hasselblad is not just about the “beautiful/ugly”, but photography that captures cultural and social contexts and international artforms, which is not always straightforward and understandable at first sight.

National Geographic Photo Contests

National Geographic has many photo contests every year on a variety of topics. Topics, of course, are always connected with our planet: cities and countries, wildlife, architecture and urban studies, ethnography, animalistics, etc. Prize funds for competitions are different: sometimes only recognition, sometimes— photographic equipment, in other cases — monetary prizes.

There is also the annual National Geographic photography competition, where thousands of photographers from all over the world compete, there are many different topics and the first place winner receives a prize of $ 7,500.

World Press Photo

Since 1955, the World Press Photo Contest has rewarded photographers for the best shots that have contributed to photojournalism over the past year. Whether presented as single frames or series, these images are judged on their accuracy, fairness, and visually compelling representation of our world.

Participation in the World Press Photo Contest is free and open to all professional photographers working in the field of photojournalism and/or documentary photography.

The World Press Photo 2023 competition is held in 6 regions of the world — Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, Southeast Asia and Oceania. Works will be evaluated in the region in which they were made.

Pulitzer Prize

The World Press Photo is often ranked as important as the Pulitzer Prize. Pulitzer is the largest historical award in the field of literature, music, theater and journalism, founded in 1917. Getting a Pulitzer is prestigious, important, and significant for any cultural figure. Among the nominations are also “Art Photography” and “News Photography”, although in fact both of these areas imply social and political problems, world events and conflicts, since Pulitzer is mainly focused on journalism. In 2019, for example, Italian photographer Lorenzo Tugnoli won the Feature Photography category with a disturbing and dramatic series of images about the war in Yemen for The Washington Post.

And in the News Photography category, the Reuters team of photographers won the Pulitzer Prize for emotional footage of migrants crossing from South and Central America to the United States.

Sony World Photography Awards

As the name suggests, this competition was established by Sony. And, despite the fact that both Canon and Nikon have similar competitions, it was Sony’s initiative that reached the most impressive scale. The system is standard for any competition: a lot of categories in everything from architecture to portrait, with an impressive prize fund to be won. In addition, the winner’s works will be presented in the exposition of the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London, and the flight and accommodation are fully compensated by the organizer.

This competition is worth paying attention to, if only because each photo of the finalists here is, if not a masterpiece, then a work of art for sure. Here, the artistic, semantic, and historical value of photography in each of the nominations is evaluated. For example, in 2019, the overall winner was journalist Federico Borella with a series of photographs dedicated to the story of male suicide in a farming community in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which has experienced the worst drought in 140 years. Here is a public outcry, and the problem of world ecology, and the tragedy of man, and an expressive, deep frame.

In conclusion, there are many photography contest around the world that focus on a wide range of topics and offer different prestige and prizes to their winners. These competitions are a great place for aspiring photographers to get inspired to do great things with their work.

There’s no doubt that hemp is an all-natural engine of innovation that could take us into a greener, more resilient future — provided we approach it thoughtfully and with respect.

The Most Famous Fashion Photographers of Our Time

Fashion photography as a genre of photo art emerged around the beginning of the 20th century, and during this time it managed to take a strong position among the genres of professional photography. Back in the 1920s, fashion photography began to supplement graphics in periodicals and advertising for all kinds of products and services. Today, no advertising campaign in the field of fashion, cosmetics, and even restaurants and casinos review can do without it. Additionally, the number of magazines filled with fashion photos is growing year by year. To take a closer look at this word of fashion photography, we have compiled a list of the best fashion photographers of today and what works have made them famous.

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz or Anna-Lou – her Jewish name – was born on October 2, 1949 in the city of Waterbury, Connecticut. Such celebrities as Demi Moore, Bette Midler, and Sting got in front of  her camera lens. The interesting element of her photography is that Annie’s authority allowed her to take pictures of these stars, in the nude. To please Annie Leibovitz, Arnold Schwarzenegger posed half-naked with a cigar in his mouth while riding a horse in Malibu. And the famous football player David Beckham showed his tattoos in an open cabriolet. If you recall all the works of Annie Leibovitz, you can recognize many famous musicians, athletes, actors and actresses.

Mario Testino

The British photographer of Peruvian origin is one of the most famous photographers of our time. He started his career in the late 80s: after meeting Carine Roitfeld, where he did his first shooting for French Vogue. More recently, he has worked on advertising campaigns of the most famous brands, photo shoots of almost all supermodels, actresses and performers, as well as author’s albums.

Markus Olsson

Markus Olsson is a rising star of fashion photography. Olsson was fascinated by this art form from an early age and after graduating from high school entered photography school. Markus then spent six years assisting leading Swedish photographers Kalle Stolz, Camille Akrans, and Mikael Jansson. He started his own career in 2005. Markus likes to play with light, resulting in sensual, almost fairy-tale images. He gives the model freedom of action in front of the camera and, watching, manages to catch unique moments. Markus can be called a productive photographer. Among his clients are Elle, Velvet, Tush, Bon, Arena, Vs. and S Magazine.

Will Davidson

Will Davidson is a fashion photographer from London. After studying for one year at SCA, Davidson decided to take up freestyle swimming. During this time, he met David Bailey and worked as a prime assistant for four years. At the same time, Davidson continued to be involved in numerous projects, including the publication of Location in 2004 and Democracy in 2005. In 2005, he collaborated with fashion designer Kim Jones to shoot a short film for Topman called Pop Life. Davidson is regularly featured in Muse, Rush, V Magazine, Dazed & Confused, and GQ Style. He is currently working on a book with the working title All the Cool Kids.

Victor Demarchelier

It is not difficult to understand Victor Demarchelier’s desire to become a photographer. The son of famous fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier, the younger Demarchelier practically grew up shooting for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazines. But he did not make the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps right away. As Viktor said in one of the interviews: “I used to receive cameras as a gift for Christmas, but I never thought of becoming a photographer.” And he added: “I never wanted to be one of those people who just do what their parents did. But after graduating from Vassar College with a degree in economics, I quickly realized that I didn’t want to work in a bank.” Demarchelier, Jr. began to work in the field of fashion photography and after three years was published in Vogue, Interview, Harper’s Bazaar, and 25 Magazine.

Solve Sundsbo

Fashion photographer Solve Sundsbo is “the only man who made her wear a snake”, Naomi Campbell says. This influential Norwegian, who lives in London, started his career as an assistant to Nick Knight. Today he is called an innovator in fashion photography and is published in all leading publications: Vogue, V Magazine, Pop, i-D, Dazed & Confused, Numéro, and Visionaire. It is worth noting that Solve himself is the author of a high-profile photo shoot for the V Magazine issue dedicated to full-figured models. He also shot commercials for such brands as Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, Nike, Lancôme, MAC Cosmetics, and H&M.

David Lachapelle

David Lachapelle is one of the legends of modern photography. Often the careers of future stars begin modestly, but in the case of LaChapelle, this was not the case. At the age of 17, he had already been doing shoots for Interview magazine with the assistants of Andy Warhol himself. Later, the list of publications that worked with Lachapelle grew: from Vanity Fair and French and Italian Vogue to Rolling Stone and The New York Times Magazine.

Kai Zi Feng

Born in Shanghai, Kai had an early start to his career as an artist. Already at the age of 14, he became the lucky recipient of many awards, and exhibitions of this young talent were held in Japan, America and China. At the age of 24, Kai discovered the art of photography. Two years later, his works regularly appear on the pages of British Vogue, Vogue Italia, L’Uomo Vogue, Chinese Vogue, Vogue Nippon, and 10 Magazine. Kai Zi Feng is the author of advertising campaigns for Burberry, Aquascutum, Blumarine, Elie Saab, Thomas Burberry, and Shanghai Tang. The photographer currently lives in London.

Josh Olins

Josh Olins is one of the most sought-after photographers today. His works are published on the pages of Vogue, Dazed, V, Love, and Numéro. Take a look at Benetton’s and Topshop’s fall ad campaigns, this will be his. It is worth noting that Olins is particularly good at group photos. Many are surprised by Josh’s way of working: he is involved in all stages of creating a picture, supervises the work of stylists, make-up artists and hairdressers, considering it necessary to obtain a successful result. Living in London and New York, he draws inspiration even from long flights.

Fashion photography is now a key part of everyday commercial life, and there are many incredible photographers out there, however, those that we have mentioned here are some of the most notable for modern fashion photography.

A Quick Guide to Tumeric and Curcumin

Turmeric is one of the oldest food and medicinal plants known to man, with a 4,500-year-old history. Since the early part of the 1800s, turmeric was already mentioned in cookbooks. As a spice, turmeric is available in most grocery stores in North America and the United Kingdom. Still, most people in the West had never heard of or only recently heard of this valuable spice.

These days, however, turmeric is a word touted in many health food sites and shops. For example, coffee shops now serve turmeric lattes, turmeric smoothies, and various dishes and desserts with a touch of turmeric. You can take turmeric latte mix to enjoy a warm cup of golden milk anytime. If you are curious, here is a quick guide on the essential things to know about turmeric, which many people claim has several health benefits.

What is turmeric?

Turmeric is a plant that grows well in Southeast Asia and India, the world’s largest producers of turmeric. You can use fresh turmeric rhizome or root in several dishes, just like ginger. But more consumers prefer to buy it in powdered form, which they can use as a spice or add to their drinks.

Difference between turmeric and curcumin

Turmeric is the root of the turmeric plant, which is related to ginger. Turmeric is classified as a spice that comprises over 100 compounds. One of the compounds that interest many people and researchers is curcumin, an active compound that provides many of the health benefits of turmeric. Curcumin is also the source of the bright yellow color of the spice. However, only about five percent of the spice is curcumin compound.

Potential health benefits of turmeric/curcumin

The popularity of turmeric today comes from its potential health benefits, which you can credit to curcumin, one of the spice’s active compounds.

Relieves pain due to arthritis.

Curcumin contains many anti-inflammatory properties that can be an effective treatment for arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. In a study of 139 participants with knee osteoarthritis symptoms, they gave the participants a 50mg nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) twice a day or 500mg curcumin three times a day. The study, which lasted for one month, showed the pain-relieving effects of curcumin are similar to the effects of the NSAID. Moreover, the patients who took curcumin lost weight and had fewer side effects from the natural remedy.

It can possibly reduce symptoms of depression

A depressed person has a lower level of BDNF or brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein in the spinal cord and brain that manages the communication between nerve cells. Curcumin can help to regulate and enhance this, aiding in depression.

It can help manage diabetes.

The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric can potentially help prevent type 2 diabetes by reducing high cholesterol, lowering blood sugar, and improving insulin resistance.

It can improve skin health.

The anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and oxidant-rich curcumin can help treat psoriasis, eczema, and acne.

While many people already believe in the health benefits of turmeric and curcumin, you should still seek your doctor’s advice before you start using turmeric or curcumin.

The Science of Modern Complications in Computer Processing Improvements

Moore’s law states that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles about every two years. While this held for decades, it’s no longer the reality. The implications of this development for the advancement of computer power are immense, though they’re not quite as black and white as they might appear. For the user, this means that more complex programs and systems might be approaching a bottleneck, though how much this will affect each person will depend on the forms of use.

Will Slowing Advancements be Noticed?

For users of low-demand software, there is the possibility that a slowing in the advancement of processing power won’t make much of a difference. For an illustration, consider what goes into playing slot games for real money on an online casino website. The websites that offer these games are already designed to cover a range of desktop and mobile devices, so device speed is rarely an issue. The same applies to the games like Bigger Bass Bonanza and Mustang Gold, which still look great and play well on older systems. There’s a standard here, where the online casino business is almost immune from the growing demands which affect other tech-reliant industries.

On the other end of the spectrum is the growing landscape of video editing jobs. These are constantly working with high resolutions, where encoding speed for rendering is very reliant on processing speeds. As 4K becomes the default, a stagnation of speeds would result in serious problems for productivity, even for the fastest purpose-built video editing workstations. Fortunately, since resolutions higher than 4K offer nearly imperceptible differences to the human eye, this industry should slowly catch up.

The Cause of Problems

The big issue for the degradation of Moore’s law comes from physical complexities in minimum sizes. Transistor sizes are measured in nanometers, where many of the fastest technologies are seeing plateaus at four or seven nanometers. While IBM announced that it has developed two-nanometer tech, this is still years from implementation. It’s also approaching a hard limit since two nanometers is just ten times the size of a silicon atom.

Smaller transistors are required because the less room they take up, the more of them can fit in single chips, the less energy they require, and the less heat they produce. Hitting a limit means hardware developers instead need to increase size, as has been seen with the last few generations of video cards like Nvidia’s RTX 3090 and 4090.

Finding a Solution

The solution that some developers are finding to the slowing of transistor shrinkage is to instead look for other avenues of improvement. This was seen in clock speeds in CPUs years ago, which saw huge jumps to around 3.5 Ghz, after which serious diminishing returns appeared. Instead, the solution was to make chips more efficient with what they could do per cycle through better engineering principles.

With new approaches like 3D processing technology, hardware manufacturers have discovered another way to keep pushing forward, and new possibilities are always being explored. In this way, the limits of Moore’s law might only apply in a strictly structural sense, where the concept of ever-improving performance, at its core, might hold for decades to come. That is until we finally and inevitably explore and exploit all available options.
